Years ago when GD updated to support .png, I emailed Mr. Stein this question his answer was to use an older version of the library. At this point I'm presuming there's no way to support .gif with the GD library. Would ImageMagick better suit your needs? Or even, do your drawing in .png then pass the image to ImageMagick to convert to .gif?
