Windows only detects FAT, FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT natively. To use a Linux partition (ext*) you need to install a driver.... however I have only heard of windows drivers for ext2 partitions, which doesn't support journaling , so if the power went out your drive's data would be potentially nuked if you were accessing it at that time.
