In 2012, a newer API was released called CREST expanding the kind of access to EVE that was available to third-party developers.

The CREST/XML API using API Keys has been discontinued on May 8th 2018. Should you use an application that is asking for an API Key, please contact the creator of the application to check if an update using ESI is available.

As someone who has needed to hold secret security clearance as a condition of employment for most of my career, I can assure you that the API check required by most Eve corporations is relatively non-intrusive.
