Of course, you can add a multitude of data stores, local and remote, and it is THE way to go. But I needed to be able to backup my virtual appliances to an external hard drive using NTFS (so that it can be read on my Windows machines).

May 21, 2010 · ESX(i) is no file server, it's just not built for that purpose. What you can do, is to create a datastore on your second disk (Caution: This will delete all data currently on this disk!!!!), install a virtual machine (a file server) for which you create the virtual disk on that datastore and share the data this way.

Just use RDM mappings instead, for eSATA connectivity to your enclosure instead of USB 3.0, described at Practical ways to deal with VMware ESXi 5.0′s 2TB virtual disk size limitation.

Mar 03, 2015 · NTFS doesn't work with ESXI 5 pass through and yea sadly exFAT was the first format I tried before downloading a FAT tool and trying that also. Thanks anyway, all good suggestions :-) I'm just about to try a seagate Goflex, USB 3,0 2TB drive, will report back findings.
