Microsoft announced that Microsoft Extended Hotfix Support is no longer included as a Software Assurance (SA) benefit for new customers. Existing customers who had SA prior to July 1st, 2017 are unaffected. This was announced in the July 2017 Microsoft Product Terms (PT).

The Extended Hotfix Support benefit is no longer included in SA. This change will not affect Customers who have active SA coverage prior to July 1, 2017. That's seemingly a big change.

That's just my opinion of course, but with that being said, what is the difference between mainstream support and extended support? On Microsoft's Life cycle page, they show that mainstream support for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 will run out January 2015, but extended support will last until January 2020.
