By enabling the option Enable native XMLHTTP support in Advnaced tab of IE fixes the issue. Since we prefers native XMLHTTP object over ActiveXObject, the exception might be caused due to using ActiveXObject. But still not sure what could be the root cause or is there any other better way to solve the issue. We use IE8.

Users using Etherpad with Internet Explorer 7+ may have an issue where they cannot load a pad as it seems to get stuck on "Loading". Mar 10, 2011 · In home environments, IE8 & IE7 have all the "bells and whistles" enabled. Among those options is "Native XMLHttpRequest" support enabled. However, in corporate environments, many of these options are not enabled by default due to security concerns. IE has a fallback XML parser that works from IE6 through IE8.
