Sep 07, 2009 · Hello, I would like to know if VMWare ESXi 4.0 supports SAN, NAS if so how does it work, how to configure and setup SAN/NAS in ESXi 4.0? Currently I have one ESXi server installed in Dell PowerEdge 2950 server that has 5 x 300 GB hard drives configured as RAID5, am planning to add 2 more ESXi servers and also have disk storage.

Mar 18, 2009 · Cons of using NAS NFS with VMware ESX. The No. 1 drawback associated with using NAS NFS with VMware ESX is supposed to be performance. To some extent, NAS performance does tend to be a bit slower than FC or iSCSI SAN storage. Most VMs will find it difficult to see a difference because storage is rarely the bottleneck.Author: Marc Staimer

Mar 20, 2014 · I would be running VMware 5.5 with 3 ESXi Hosts, around 25 VM's which include IIS Servers, a SQL 2008 R2 server, application servers, terminal servers, file server, etc. So 3x enterprise class servers with four hour support, I assume, all running on a single SMB class (non-enterprise) NAS device with next business day support.

With NFS 3, ESXi does not support the delegate user functionality that enables access to NFS volumes by using nonroot credentials. You must ensure that each host has root access to the volume. NFS 3 supports hardware acceleration that allows your host to integrate with NAS devices and use several hardware operations that NAS storage provides.

VMware supports Storage Virtualization Devices (SVD) with ESX 3.0.2 or later. * Backend storage arrays must be listed on both the ESX 3.x Storage/SAN Compatibility Guide and the SVD Vendor supported list. * Do not share the same LUN of the backend storage array between SVD and any other host.

ESXi does not support the delegate user functionality that enables access to NFS volumes using non-root credentials. NFS Storage depicts a virtual machine using the NFS volume to store its files. In this configuration, the host connects to the NFS server, which stores the virtual disk files, through a regular network adapter.

Personal data and configurations need to be backed up before sending the NAS for repair service. Synology and its authorized partners have no responsibility to retain your privacy and confidentiality. Product and the system will be restored to factory default, and the original data will not be able to retrieve.

In contrast to NAS datastores, you do not have to invoke a methods for creation and removal of the datastore on each host. An ESX/ESXi host automatically discovers the VMFS volume on attached Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) on startup and after re-scanning the host bus adapter.
