Jan 26, 2016 · Any device that uses the Wii's support for USB HID should work in Dolphin. The caveat is that many accessories don't use this interface. Jul 06, 2018 · The Wii U does not output enough power through the USB ports for most external drives. Usually, you need to use the USB Y-cable so the harddrive can draw twice the power. These cable look something like this:

You can also format your device by going to System Settings, then Data Management on the Wii U Menu. As people say, the Wii U ports are USB2, not 3. Currently, I have a basic 80GB 2.5" drive hooked up via a y-cable. I have a few games installed now and things run fine. Worth noting - The drive was from an old laptop and I used an old external case I had lying around. Works well :)
