ACLU Position. Given the reference to "a well regulated Militia" and "the security of a free State," the ACLU has long taken the position that the Second Amendment protects a …

Feb 26, 2017 · The first reason is that the 2nd amendment is part of the constitution. The ACLU does not defend the constitution. They defend an agenda. Some (like me) would say that their agenda is in many cases in direct conflict with the constitution.

Apr 12, 2019 · But while the ACLU is commendably willing to defend the First Amendment rights of gun owners and Second Amendment advocates, the national organization still takes the position that, contrary to what the Supreme Court has said, the Constitution does not guarantee an individual right to armed self-defense.

Aug 31, 2009 · The ACLU has often been criticized for “ignoring the Second Amendment,” and refusing to fight for an individual’s right to own a gun or other weapons. The ACLU, however, has not ignored this issue. The national ACLU Board of Directors has in fact discussed the civil liberties aspects of the Second Amendment many times.

Aug 21, 2011 · I am looking for legal support to file a lawsuit against the federal government for their 1986 machine gun ban which prohibits law abiding citizens from purchasing full auto firearms made after 1986. This is a clear violation of our 2nd Amendment rights. From people I have talked to they say the NRA wont take the case, so I looked at the ACLU website in hopes of finding that the people who ...

The American Civil Liberties Union does not oppose gun control laws. As an organization dedicated to defending all constitutional rights, we believe the Second Amendment allows reasonable restrictions to promote public safety. But gun control laws, like any law, should be fair, effective and not based on prejudice or stereotype.

Mar 26, 2018 · Very verbose. I wish this statement began with something like, "the ACLU protects constitutional rights, and we don't think the Second Amendment is under threat like the gun lobby claims." That's really what you were trying to say, it think. The Right Wing attacks the ACLU for defending other amendments but not the Almighty Second.Author: Louise Melling

ANALYSIS Although ACLU policy cites the Supreme Court's decision in U.S. v. Miller as support for our position on the Second Amendment, our policy was never dependent on Miller.Rather, like all ACLU policies, it reflects the ACLU's own understanding of the Constitution and civil liberties.

Dec 05, 2018 · The ACLU's official position on the 2nd amendment is that it refers to a collective right, rather than an individual right, to keep and bear arms. It's pretty hilarious to see the ACLU criticizing another organization for failing to fight for a right the ACLU doesn't believe exists in the first place.

The ACLU has won support from women’s groups for our stand on women’s rights, but has angered some feminists for our First Amendment stand on pornography. In short, the principled stance we take on defending the Bill of Rights is neither liberal nor conservative.
