Ps: Note that when opening an 16-bpp png (8-bit color + 8-bit transparency) image in Photoshop then it will open up as RGB instead of Indexed color mode since the Indexed color mode does not support 8-bit transparency.

Feb 27, 2011 · PNG pretty much obsoletes GIF in nearly all cases except for animation (although it still have a little bit of browser support problem, IE6 doesn't support PNG's alpha transparency although regular GIF-like transparency is no problem). PNG is lossless format which means color information is fully intact. GIF is nowadays only useful for animation.

The transparency on a png file is an aditional channel, this is, you have your rgb image (a simple graph or photo) and besides that you have one more channel that you can use or not. In that channel you can have some parts in black and some in white or inclusive you can have a complete grayscale photo.
