Apr 30, 2018 · Dropbox resolves symbolic links (symlinks, soft link) by default. On Dropbox servers, symlinks are completely replaced by the data they point to, so that you have the actual data in the cloud — not just a pointer to it. This works great for syncing folders outside your Dropbox! It is an obscure feature-not-a-bug.

BTW. If you are on filesystem like FAT that does not support symbolic links, and your repository uses them, you can set core.symlinks configuration variable to false, and symlinks would be checked out as small plain text files that contain the link text. – Jakub Narębski Jun 5 '09 at 9:42

Apr 07, 2016 · While I understand that NTFS does not support Symlinks, it is something that would be extremely helpful. The issue that i've found is that any tarball package that has symlinks will simply be broken in the sense that the link is never created.

The file you are trying to copy is apparently a symbolic link, which just points to another file. Removable media typically are formatted with a Microsoft filesystem such as FAT32 or NTFS, which do not support symbolic links, so you can not place one on the drive.

that's an idea I will first try to use symlinks, and if it does not work I will try it with strm files.
