May 14, 2012 · However, movie files with AAC 5.1 audio do not. I don't get any sound out of my receiver until I select the "Downmix multichannel audio to stereo" box. I have to set my AV receiver to convert the (now downmixed) stereo signal back to either Pro Logic or Pro Logic II to get some sort of 5.1 audio.

My laptop then presumably passes the AAC through the built-in SPDIF. I was looking for tips on receivers or all-in-one type home theatre systems that can handle AAC? Cheers, B

Oct 22, 2012 · AppleTV has never officially supported 5.1 AAC only Dolby Digital 5.1. The majority of amps/receivers do not support AAC, and AppleTV AFAIK has never transcoded on the fly to 5.1 Dolby Digital. Stereo audio AAC/WAV/Apple Lossless etc get converted by ATV2 and 3 to stereo linear PCM for optical output at 48 kHz (yes not 44.1 kHz even for CD) 16 bit.

Dec 21, 2014 · ACC is stereo and canot carry more than 2 channels of audio. The nearest you'd get to 5.1 if using AAC is if you matrix 5.1 into the two channels permitted. If ripping a film then you cannot rip the audio and choose discrete 5.1 AAC and you'd need to select formats that actually support discrete multichannel audio. AAC is a stereo 2ch format format.

Modern videoes 1080p, 720p, MP4, mov, Matroska (mkv) often use audio compressed in AAC-5.1, this is good because AAC is more efficient than AC3, but that is bad for my receiver that, as commonly for a receiver, it supports only the AC3 format.

Jun 28, 2014 · My receiver says it is getting a 5.1 signal, but only a 2.0 output is played through the speakers. When I use MPC ffdshow, however, the same files play with the correct 5.1 sound. Looking at my collection, the vast majority of brrips these days come with AAC sound, so this could be a big issue for a lot of people like me.
