My requirements are to support Multicast for future deployment and vlan extension over a MPLS ISP( ISP is provding ospf handoff) I will have to use a software based solution since the tunnel needs to start and terminate on 3845s so L2tpv3 which is router-based solution is a good candidate.

UDP multicast fits nicely for my purpose. But I am worried about multicast support in commonplace routers. I need to deploy the system to normal households equipped with a Wifi router, so I could encounter any kind of routers. I will use UDP broadcast if multicast will be more trouble than benefit.

My ISP is on the MBone, but the router/portmaster that they use to give me access does not support multicast. What can we do? First, they should make sure that the router/portmaster really can't support multicast routing. It may be possible to do so simply by reconfiguring it.

I remember a while back our ISP said that they "only support IGMPv3, not IGMPv2". I'm not sure how IGMP would come into play on the link with the ISP as I'm not expecting to send or recieive any IGMP joins on the link to them. I should only have PIM joins/prunes I think since we are peering MSDP with them. Here is my connection to the ISP.

Multicast currently doesnt work for clients over the Internet. Any multicast solutions such as IPTV are within a single ISP, not across them. What both Netflix and Youtube does is to have multiple datacenters along with cacheboxes all around the world so the distance the "moviepackets" must travel from their servers to your computer is as short as possible.
