The actual statement in the article is a bit ambiguous: "Edge will not support Microsoft's ActiveX, Browsers Helper Objects (BHOS), VBScript and third-party toolbars built for IE11, all of which could crimp performance and bring security woes."

In spite of the broad industry support for JavaScript, Microsoft probably could have garnered equally wide support for VBScript if it had ported the language to other platforms early in its lifecycle.
