I'm interested in GIS and fantasy mapping, and terrain can be simply represented as a greyscale bitmap where the value of each pixel represents height. 8 bit greyscale does not give sufficient vertical resolution, while 16 bit does, and allows GIMP like Photoshop to be used for mapmaking.5/5

Jul 21, 2007 · I frequently use the GIMP for patterns/fractals that are to be used as height fields. For this, it would be nice if 16bit gray scale was available. While it wasn't an issue for me when I was shooting film camera and my negatives were scanned into JPG format, now, when I shoot RAW using Olympus E-1 and develop ORF files saving them as 16-bit TIFFs it starts to bothers me. If you have a previous version of PS Elements, there is probably no reason to upgrade to PSE 10 or future editions unless Adobe adds 16 bit suppost -- other than possible getting the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) -- which of course does support 16 bit channel files. Once you leave ACR, there is pretty much 0 support of 16 bit files.
