Aug 23, 2013 · Hotswap is supported if the hardware and driver supports it. That's the big question. Some hardwar and drivers claim to support it, but really don't. Additionally, FreeNAS wasn't designed with the expectation that you'll be swapping drives in and out regularly.

Is there a way in freenas to dedicate one drive to backups (samba share)... such that I can hot swap it out with another and have one drive off site? It would be really nice to just pull a drive out and swap it with another every week or so and not to have to deal with software anything.

Jan 05, 2017 · Hot swapping means you can swap it without powering down - swapping it while everything is still running. Thanks for correcting me on this. To be honest, I always thought of hot swap to be more of a hardware level term, probably from my original vocation being in electronic/electrical engineering, but your definitions make perfect sense.

Sep 14, 2012 · The only thing the hardware raid solutions really have going for them are things like hotswap and such, and even that can be dealt with. Yup, ZFS is hot swap, for example. The thing that I've found with hardware RAID is that it makes "blind swapping" easy... that is, swapping without needing to look at the OS.

Jun 26, 2008 · Can I simply plug it in and have FreeNAS / OpenFiler pick it up and make it accessible provided the chipset/drivers support it? OR. Can have my setup with the 3rd drive included during the original config, and then power down the system to swap drives around (or remove) and then restart?
