Furthermore, GPU-assisted encoding is codec-specific. Second limitation is Linux/Unix support of AMD and Nvidia. Unfortunately CUDA has not yet been implemented in ffmpeg. CUDA has only Java, .NET and Python bindings and ffmpeg is writen in C/C++. The new API will have native C++ bindings.
