Mar 30, 2009 · The main ESX feature is VMotion and all stuff around it. You can migrate VM between physical server and no one will notice. USB will prevent it, since VM is locked to physical USB port. Maybe VMware some day will introduce host-USB in ESX, but today you have to use USB-over-IP solution (will work with VMotion)...

Jul 21, 2009 · The laptop I'm using ((Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S7210) has a Marvell Yukon 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller and, not suprisingly, ESXi does not support this. ESXi 4 refuses in install (failed to load lvmdriver), ESXi 3.5 installs but my IP address is 0.0.0.0. After reading this thread on adding a NIC driver to ESX 3.5, I understand that I will probably need to swap out the NIC for an Intel …

Sep 26, 2012 · Windows VMware ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 support, but it's currently limited to using the vSphere Web Client to map client-side USB 3.0 devices to the remote VM. Long story short, turns out ESXi 5.1 doesn't really support USB 3.0 in the way you might think. In other words, if your system running ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 ports, that's nice!

Oct 08, 2009 · I recently upgraded my ESXi 3.5 host to run the new ESXi 4 to get the USB support. I would like to attach a USB external hard drive to a guest VM running on that host. I upgraded the VM hardware to version 7, I added the USB controller virtual hardware to the VM and booted it up.

For USB passthrough from an ESXi host to a virtual machine, the USB arbitrator can monitor a maximum of 15 USB controllers. If your system includes controllers that exceed the 15 controller limit and you connect USB devices to them, the devices are not available to the virtual machine.

Unlike USB flash devices, the ESXi installer creates a VMFS datastore on M.2 and other non-USB low-end flash media. If you deploy a virtual machine or migrate a virtual machine to this boot device datastore, the boot device can be worn out quickly depending on the endurance of the flash device and the characteristics of the workload.

Mar 25, 2018 · You can mount a USB drive inside ESXi but it only supports FAT16 and is designed for deploying VIB updates. You'll never make it a datastore. Sure - Local disk works at 3 or 6Gb/s.
