Aug 10, 2005 · A discontiguous network comprises a major net that separates another major net. In Figure 1, a subnet of network 172.20.0.0 separates network 172.16.0.0. 172.16.0.0 is a discontiguous network. This document describes why RIPv1 and IGRP do not support discontiguous networks and explains how you can work around this issue.

Mar 24, 2010 · I was taking a test exam today that was asking about RIPv2's support for discontiguous networks by default. I remember reading that RIPv2 doesn't support it unless the no auto-summary command is configured which as far as I know isn't on by default. The test exam, however, stated the RIPv2 does supports discontiguous networks by default.

When two or more subnetworks of a classful network connected together by different classful networks. EIGRP does not support discontiguous networks by default because EIGRP does automatic summarization by default. If there are discontiguous networks, automatic summarization causes inconsistent routing.

Dec 19, 2001 · Both EIGRP and OSPF support VLSM (athough not by default in the case of EIGRP). So if you move a remote network from one router to another at your central site, you must turn off autosummarization so that the discontiguous network can be found by others.

Discontiguous Subnets One of the problems frequently encountered with classful routing protocols is the need to support discontiguous subnets. A discontiguous subnet is two or more portions of a major network that are divided by another major network. Figure 3.3 illustrates the concept.

An example of discontiguous network can be seen in Figure 5-4 where 10.1.0.0/16 and 10.2.0.0/16 networks are separated by 192.168.x.0/24 networks. Remember that RIPv1 does not support such networks. EIGRP by default does not support discontigous networks, but can be configured to do so.

A discontiguous network is comprised of a major net separated by another major net. In the figure below, network 131.108.0.0 is separated by a subnet of network 137.99.0.0; 131.108.0.0 is a discontiguous network This document will describe why RIPv1 and IGRP do not support discontiguous networks and how to work around it.
