ASA is a fundamentally a security appliance. So it doesnt support a lot of general IP routing features like PBR, dual default routes. and wide range of other things. ASA's dont support GRE as you need to create a Tunnel interface in order to run GRE. In fact you cant even create a loopback interface on a ASA.

These days I am interested in GRE tunneling. I know that GRE is developed by CISCO and many routers produced by CISCO and Juniper support GRE tunneling. But I want to know other routers or firewalls support GRE tunneling. How can I know whether some routers support GRE if there's no mention in product specification without testing by myself?

Aug 29, 2016 · Don't have Cisco routers at all sites (DMVPN requires an IOS router, ASA's etc don't support GRE) simpler, offloading configuration to the service provider . It should also be noted that those are not the only two options. You can have a plain IPsec site to site VPN between sites as well. However they are only useful for unicast traffic.
