Oct 21, 2012 · AppleTV has never officially supported 5.1 AAC only Dolby Digital 5.1. The majority of amps/receivers do not support AAC, and AppleTV AFAIK has never transcoded on the fly to 5.1 Dolby Digital. Stereo audio AAC/WAV/Apple Lossless etc get converted by ATV2 and 3 to stereo linear PCM for optical output at 48 kHz (yes not 44.1 kHz even for CD) 16 bit.

The Apple TV can certainly “do it,” because it doesn't have to “do” anything; it merely passes it on to the 5.1 DTS decoder that anyone with 5.1 surround speakers already has. Dec 07, 2017 · A Yes, you can get surround sound from your Apple TV 4K, which supports Dolby’s AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) and E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1) audio formats. Since you already own a surround sound system, it would be crazy if you didn’t use the Apple TV for that purpose!

I’m on Day 5 of my 1 week trial, strongly considering a switch from DTV Satellite. Not a deal breaker, but have to admit I’m a little disappointed. Spent a lot of time and effort putting 7.1 surround in the basement and stereo just doesn’t sound great.

Dec 02, 2019 · I have my Apple TV 4K connected to HDMI to my Sony Bravia Z9D and it has stopped passing through surround over optical to my receiver. I had to change the Apple TV’s Audio Format setting to transcode everything to DD 5.1 to get any surround sound.
