A very important thing to note about this tutorial: Because the Voodoo 1, 2 and some other cards do not support the stencil buffer, this demo will NOT run on those cards. It will ONLY run on cards that support the stencil buffer. If you're not sure if your card supports the stencil buffer, download the code, and try running the demo.

The default depth-stencil buffer created during device creation will not be large enough if the user resizes the window to a very small size. Furthermore, if the device is created with multisampling, the default depth-stencil buffer will not work with the shadow map texture because texture render targets do not support multisample.

OpenGL is a state machine, so whatever you last set is the current value--even when you clear. The default stencil mask value is 255 so your glClear works on the first frame. But after that, the stencil mask is 0 (because you set it that way) and so the stencil buffer does NOT get cleared.

Sep 13, 2017 · It appears to be supported on all Direct 10 cards released since mid 2008 and, in fact, is apparently a current format of the said standard and, even so, any device which do not support the INTZ format standard would not have enough throughput to efficiently render it in any modern, polygon- and pixel-saturated game.
