The only controller Dead Space likes is the Xbox 360 controller. It's the only officially supported controller, since you can't redefine the buttons on any other controller. If you insert a non-360 controller, it will detect it and automatically map the buttons for you, but the buttons will be wrong.

Oct 14, 2008 · I am playing the PC version of Dead Space with my Xbox 360 controller, and was wondering if it is normal that there is a dead zone on the analog sticks? What I mean is that when I move the analog sticks, they don't register the movement until I am almost half way with the movement range.

My PC recognizes my PS3 controller as an Xbox 360 controller. In Dead Space, the actions are assigned to my controller as such. Therefore, the buttons to shoot and use the weapon's special are on L2 and R2, which is awkward for a PS3 controller, because they are recognized as the trigger buttons on a 360.
