Dec 12, 2017 · The liveCD you have chrooted from appears to be 64 bit, so the kernel is set up for a 64 bit CPU. If you really want a 32 bit kernel, exit the chroot, then go back in with Code:

I installed gentoo using the x86 handbook and a recent sysrescuecd usb drive. The install was unremarkable except for trying to build a 64 bit kernel. No matter what I do, the kernel build fails very early with the message: kernel/bounds.c:1:0 error: CPU you selected does not support x86-64 instruction set.

CPU_FLAGS_X86 is a USE_EXPAND variable containing instruction set and other CPU-specific features. Previous USE flags corresponding to the instruction sets and other features specific to the x86 / amd64 architecture are being moved into a separate USE_EXPAND variable called CPU_FLAGS_X86 .
