You only "need" to use cpuid+rdtsc if your processor does not support rdtscp. Otherwise, rdtscp is what you want, and will accurately give you the information you are after. Both instructions provide you with a 64-bit, monotonically increasing counter that represents the number of cycles on the processor.

all of the errors. Munch on these: (ERR_SYS_TIMER_RDTSC) – CPU does not support rdtsc instruction. Starting this thread to discuss Anti-debugging, Anti-evasion and Anti-vm tricks used by malware and malcode. Starting with this nice usage of rdtsc instruction. On Intel x86, this is implemented with the RDTSC instruction (even more specifically:

However, Linux kernel does not limit the rdtsc instruction to be executed at privilege level, although x86 support the setup. That means, there is nothing stopping Linux application read TSC directly by above implementation, but these applications have to prepare to handle some strange TSC behaviors due to some known pitfalls.

On the other hand, rdtscp assembly instruction return a value indicating the CPU in which the TSC was read. It is not your case but it can be useful when you want to measure time in a simple code segment and you want to ensure that the process was not moved of CPU in the middle of the code.

statements, however, the compiler does not know those instructions are overwriting registers (RDTSC overwrites EAX and EDX, and CPUID overwrites EAX, EBX, ECX, and EDX). Thus, the compiler may not properly store away the affected registers, so this must be done manually by the programmer by pushing them onto the stack.
