Dec 18, 2010 · And that's why it's wrong. x86 and specifically i386 (they're interchangable) refer to the 80386's 32-bit instruction set. Every x86-compatible processor must be able to execute standard x86/i386 code, be that an Intel i686, an AMD K7 or Intel's latest Core i7.

May 12, 2006 · I don't think, that you have to install i586 together with a Xeon system. Remember: i586 is the class for Pentium I architecture, i686 is the class for Pentium Pro, Pentium II and above. Not sure, but I guess that Xeon belongs to the i686 tree. Hava a look at www.cpu-collection.de (english) for more information about that.
