While the Elements Editor is powerful, for full strength editing you will need the professional level product. The current versions of Photoshop Elements do have more 16-bit support than the older versions. So increased support in the future, including the Spot Healing Brush, is a possibility.

Scanner support in Photoshop CS6 Windows 64bit SFL46. May 16, 2012. ... Bear with me on this as it is to do with end quality and not productivity. I scan my images as 48 bit RGB TIFF's (both black & white and Color). I then open my target folder in Bridge and open the TIFF's in ACR. The 2012 process just makes these scans sing, and the image ...

May 17, 2008 · Based on Adobe's preliminary testing, the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS4 will give a performance kick of about 8 percent to 12 percent compared with the 32-bit version, Nack said. And for one particular task--opening up a huge 3.2-gigapixel file on a system with a lot of memory--the 64-bit version is 10 times faster, because it doesn't have to write the data that won't fit in memory onto a …

Photoshop lists the bit depth as Bits/Channel. There are 3 channels in an RGB image. So a JPEG which by definition is an RGB image with 8bits/channel will actually be a 24 bit image. No conversion necissary. Leave it as RGB and 8bit/channel in photoshop and work on 2133x1600px 150dpi image. It will be fine. Regards ~Akash

Multi-layered editing in 16 Bits/Channel is the 'professional's approach to image editing, but it was never supposed to be possible in Photoshop Elements. In this extract from the full 16 bit tutorial (available in Mark Galer’s new Photoshop Elements Maximum Performance 10 book) he adopts the age old adage

The second image was converted to 16-bit, edited and then converted back to 8-bit. You can see a slight difference with the gradients, but I really don’t know if it would be worth the effort (and the disadvantages joojaa already mentioned) in a real world scenario.
