Mar 27, 2016 · I remember you could format a regular SDXC card to work with the old 3DS. Does the same trick still work with the New 3DS? I know it's not recommended by Nintendo, but I'm just curious.

The New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, and New Nintendo 2DS XL are compatible with microSD cards up to 2 GB in size, and microSDHC cards of 4 GB and larger up to 32 GB in size. All other SD Card types are not considered compatible. SDXC and microSDXC cards are not considered compatible.

The main incompatibility is not with the cards themselves, but with the partition format SDXC cards use – by default, exFAT, or sometimes NTFS. Neither of these can be read by a 3DS. Thankfully, 64GB and 128GB SDXC cards can still be formatted to 3DS-usable FAT32 format.

I use a 64GB micro SDXC card in my JPN New 3DS LL. I've gone mostly digital and pretty much filled up a 32 GB card, so I upgraded to this 64GB micro SDXC card about a month before the New 3DS/New 3DS LL came out and used it in my regular 3DS LL with an adapter.

Oct 04, 2016 · The 3DS is compatible with SDXC cards, but you need to format to FAT32 through the use of a tool that you have to download. After you format it, if you're using a microSD and a new 3DS, just insert it. If you're using a microSD and a old 3DS, you need an adapter. If you're using a full sized SD and an old 3DS, just insert it.
