HPA is a hidden area of hard disk and is not detected by an operating system. Information about HPA parameters is stored in a special firmware chip of a hard drive. Acronis True Image cannot copy HPA to another hard drive, but the product does copy the information about HPA settings stored in MBR (when actually copying MBR itself).

standards the device supports, and whether the drive supports HPA / DCO or not. HPA can also be detected by comparing the value in the words 60-61 with the actual specification of the hard disk. It is also important to note that any HDD that supports 48 bit addressing also supports 28 bit addressing. If 48-bit addressing is also supported

The crucial factor is that LBA-3 has embedded in it the starting location of the HPA. This information is used in steps 3-4. The starting location will be where the HPA begins on the original hard disk. When you install a larger hard disk and copy LBA-3 (as part of track-0), this number does not get changed.

OK, so DBAN does not wipe Host Protected Area, because some hdd creators want to store some lame recovery data on it. But I dont see the point on not-wiping this area, since if you are going to nuke the disk, you want to really nuke the disk, not just wipe some dust out of it. :) Maybe it should be an optional choice? Also, from what I understand, DBAN does not wipe bad sectors either.
