Maybe I need to build glib again to test this. BTW, have you not used the jhbuild tool instead to do this? Also the pkgconfig path that so many headaches gave me in the past, wouldn't be interfering with your installation – Braiam Aug 29 '13 at 14:14

Sep 17, 2010 · In any case, it turned out that gettext 0.18 was not fully installed and that is why glib could not find what it needed. Even though portmaster claimed to have successfully upgraded gettext from 0.17 to 0.18, half of the files listed in pkg-plist could not be found (could not stat) when portmaster tried to make a backup package immediately before reinstall.

Sep 30, 2004 · it looks like gettext was compiled without 'nls'. This should be hardcoded into the ebuild, so it shouldn't have happened. Make sure you've emerged sync recently, then recompile gettext, and try glib again. If it still fails, try 'USE=nls emerge gettext glib'.
