Dec 19, 2012 · I spent some time working in urxvt, and getting unicode and font support working there was pretty straight-forward. Now I'd like to learn how to do the same thing with xterm, and if possibly also in in the virtual console. Currently, when I try to display unicode characters (e.g. 中文) in either, I just see rectangular blocks.

Unicode support. Xterm supports UTF-8 by default, you really do not need to do anything except starting it with -u8 option or using uxterm wrapper (which essentially does the same thing). If you want to start xterm always in unicode, just add this to .Xresources or .Xdefaults (for sake of simplicity I will always refer only to .Xdefaults):

UXTerm is XTerm with support to Unicode characters. The main difference between XTerm and Terminal is that the gnome-terminal has more features, while XTerm is minimalistic (though it has features that are't in gnome-terminal, but they are more advanced).
