The xine developers do not support CSS descrambling. The use of this software for watching your legally purchased DVDs may be illegal in your country. You need to install libdvdcss rpm besides xine-lib and xine-ui. Without libdvdcss you won't be able to watch encrypted DVDs, that is, most of them.

xine supports VCD and SVCD playback out-of-the box. Similar to DVDs, make sure you have a /dev/cdrom alias pointing to your CDROM drive which you will use to play back the (S)VCD. At the moment, CD-i formats are not supported by xine. Do not try to mount the (S)VCD.

Nov 16, 2006 · Actually I just found out that XINE can play ripped DVD from hard drive. In the setup input tab just replace the DVD device with the pathname on the hard drive where the movie is. Or one can also edit the 'config' file in.xine directory to specify 'input.dvd_device' to point to where on the hard drive the ripped DVD locates. It works great.
