The current release fixes a security issue that was registered against version 2.7.1. The old Xalan-J 2.7.1 distributions are still available on the Apache Archives. This is a mature project. There has been some discussion about supporting XPath-2. We could use your support in this major rework of the library.

An XSLT 2.0 addition carried over into XSLT 3.0 is the introduction of functions and typed variables. These provide a huge boost over named templates. In XSLT 1.0, if you wanted to evaluate a "function" you needed to use a named template:
http://apache-xml-project.6118.n7.nabble.com/XSLT-2-0-td20898.html
But my guess is that XSLT 2.0, meaning also XPath 2.0, is a huge specification compared to 1.0, with a proportional increase in complexity and development effort. > We have a fairly strong business need to support XSLT 2.0 in the near > future, and it looks like the only other portable processor is Saxon, > with its potential IP concerns.
