The first size specified is the default size of the server. If RandR is not supported, it returns 0 for the number of sizes. XRRRates returns a pointer to a the rates supported by the specified size. If RandR is not supported, it returns 0 for the number of rates.

Not all systems support Xrandr 1.2 yet: proprietary drivers or servers tend to be particularly problematic. The Xinerama multiplexer may be configured still for combining screens across multiple discrete graphics adaptors, but Xinerama provides much less information about the outputs than XRandR does.

However, I do not want multiple X screens; I want to be able to seamlessly flow between monitors. I do not want to run xinerama as it is a pain in the neck to setup and should be superseded by xrandr. Using the nouveau driver I can use all three screens exactly as I would like, but the performance is not good.
