Also check the registry values; Each of the joystick's driver has a key under the path REGSTR_PATH_JOYCONFIG that has the form Msjstick.drv<xxxx>, where the xxxx is a four-digit number used to keep the key name unique. DirectX also contains Joystick support and if you installed DirectX you might want to look there as well.

I know my Xbox controller shows up in wine and I can see it working under the joystick calibration. I have not tried it with a game though. If it does work in game, it likely won't register as an Xbox controller in game and will probably just show as a generic joystick.

You can simply cat those devices to see if the joystick works - move the stick around, press all the buttons - you should see mojibake printed when you move the sticks or press buttons. Both interfaces are also supported in wine and reported as separate devices. You can test them with wine control joy.cpl.
