Actually, Windows XP officially supports only 2 different CPU on the same motherboard. But now, we have motherbard with 1 CPU socket, and sometimes 2 CPU socket. But in the same times, we have CPU with 2 cores, or 4 cores, and maybe 8 cores inside each CPU.

The best cpu for xp is the i7 7700k. You will need the maximus ix apex, and a few work arounds. But you can get a workable xp install booted. Otherwise I know that on z97 it's much easier, you just set sata to ide mode and roll.

Jul 11, 2006 · windows does not count a dual core as two seperate processors, so you can run a dual core on xp home and you can run a dual cpu rig on xp pro just fine. i think if you need 4 seperate processors, you have to move on to server.

Sager's response.-Special thanks to Kilim. Make sure that the pre-installed OS (Windows XP w/ Service Pack 2) was correctly modified to fully support your dual core CPU.
