What I am hoping is that I can install a legacy (WinXP) USB device driver in the guest VM and have the legacy device (phone) work in the VM, without having a driver in the host, Win7 environment.

Aug 19, 2012 · You do not need to install any new permanent hardware drivers in Windows XP mode (RAM, Graphics etc) because Windows XP mode is designed to run inside Windows 7. You do however have to install extra drivers for peripheral hardware such as your USB Bluetooth dongle.
