Not all games support surround sound. While the Wii U supports surround sound, if the system is being used in an application/game that does not support surround sound, the system will default to stereo sound. The Wii U uses six-channel linear PCM audio output. With a recent system update, support for Dolby Pro Logic II was added.

Most Surround sound receivers/Home Theater systems use only these two formats (DTS and Dolby), because the obscene majority of movies, games, music, etc. only use these two formats. The Wii U can only produce 5.1 surround sound (Uncompressed) via LPCM (Non-licensed audio format).

Jan 26, 2016 · of the games i own, only Nintendoland, Mario Maker, SSB Wii U, Yoshi's Woolly World and Xenoblade X don't appear in the list. it's weird that Xenoblde isn't there considering even shovelware such as Mario Party 10 and Mario Tennis support 5.1

I haven't confirmed this yet, but I was playing a game using the Wii channel on the Wii U and it seemed as if sound was only coming from the front channels (possibly only the left and right); however, my receiver is still indicating that there are 6 channels coming from the Wii U which is the same as if a Wii U game was being played..
