The real reason is this. Nintendo does have plans to put Gamecube games on the Wii 2's VC. So they get rid of the way people can play Gamecube games so that they will have to buy VC Gamecube games on the Wii 2, even if those people already have the game for the Gamecube.

Sony did the exact same thing, removing PS2 compatibility from the PS3, and Nintendo have a track record - the original DS could play GBA games, but the current models cannot.

That's been a problem of Nintendo's since the N64. Kind of strange that the NES and Super NES had crazy 3rd party support but lost it with the N64. Probably had something to do with the fact that Nintendo stuck with the cartridge format when everybody else was moving to CD's. Either way it's bogus.
