MaxFeatures can be used for protecting WFS server because it can be set on the server side too and clients cannot override (hopefully) the setting. Mapserver, Geoserver and TinyOWS all support setting MaxFeatures on server side. My TinyOWS does not seem to advertise it but Mapserver does

Suggest them to add radio buttons 1.0.0/1.1.0/2.0.0 into the WFS server connection panel for selecting the WFS version to use. I am not sure if QGIS supports WFS 1.1.0 and 2.0.0, though. In WFS 1.1.0 standard version is not mandatory in GetCapabilities. Actually, not even "service" seems to be as you can see from the XML schema

Hi David, I use mapserver but never tried db formats, so not sure if that's the problem, that's why if you try other connections you can know if your mapfile works well or not, and see if the db file is the problem.

By default, the featurePrefix is set to ‘feature’. If the response's namespace + prefix does not match the configuration in OpenLayers, the features are not added to the layer and hence not displayed. In my case, the prefix is set to an empty string as the server does not add a prefix to the response. Also, setting the geometryName is critical.

some notes: The concept of maxfetures and startindex are passed for the entire wfs request (not per layer). It makes it a bit complicated when we do a query on more that one layer and mix in layers that support pagination and those that do not. Here is what I am proposing for now:
