If it works in java 1.7 and doesn't work in java 1.6 means most probably is a handshake issue between the client and server. java 1.6 only supports TLS 1.0 where as java 1.7 or 1.8 supports TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, TLS 1.2. You might have to used third party API's such as Bouncy Castle to for TLS 1.2 support.
