I would just like some clarification: If I want to gain the benefits of VMI (Virtual Machine Interface), I have to run a guest with a VMI enabled kernel- the kernel of the Linux host does not need such support.

Does this mean that VMware Server 2.0 supports the same sort of paravirtualization as Xen? Will any OS that's modified to run under Xen also now run under VMware Server in PV mode (e.g. SLES10, NW65SP7)?
