May 20, 2011 · I was setting up cluster-in-a-box on ESXi 4.1.0 (build 260247). I strictly followed the procedure described in the chapter 2 of the official guide. I created 5 virtual disks to be shared in a cluster. I made sure that the option "Support clustering features such as Fault Tolerance" was checked during the creation of each disk.

Fault Tolerance does not support virtual machines that are configured with vlance virtual NIC cards. However, vmxnet2, vmxnet3, and e1000 are fully supported. Virtual disks backed with thin-provisioned storage or thick-provisioned disks that do not have clustering features enabled.
