Unfortunately the whitebox ESXi server I build in June 2011 died on me when testing a Nvidia Quadro K5000 graphics card. So I needed a new ESXi server for my home lab. I looked at some HP and Dell mini servers but I decided to build a new VMware ESXi whitebox.

The version of the e1000e driver installed as standard in ESXI 5.5 is ‘VMware net-e1000e 1.1.2-4vmw.550.0.0.1331820’, which is pretty old. The community will have the install a custom VIB to have support for the I217V NIC in ESXI 5.5.

A while back I posted about the Realtek 8168/9 and Marvell NIC drivers being removed in ESXi 5.5. They are still available in ESXi 5.0/5.1 and thus in the VMware Online depot. So it is quite easy to create a customized ESXi 5.5 installation ISO that includes these ESXi 5.1 drivers (they still work with ESXi 5.5).

Installing ESXi 5.0 requires a boot device that is a minimum of 1GB in size. When booting from a local disk or SAN/iSCSI LUN, a 5.2GB disk is required to allow for the creation of the VMFS volume and a 4GB scratch partition on the boot device.
