Apr 30, 2012 · No ESXi does not support audio 'out of the box' as you say. I played around with a server 2008 VM and got the vm device in settings but never got playback working. the guide mentions. "After testing out a quick PCoIP session to this Windows 7 VM, found that sound DOES NOT WORK using the HD Audio playback device.

A little testing answered my own question. It appears that adding a 'sound' device provides remote playback via the VMware Remote Console. Since I'm going for a local console for ESXi w/ GPU passthrough, my best bet is probably just to pass through the HDMI audio device on my Radeon.

Jan 08, 2017 · Adding a sound card to ESXi hosted VM. ... This is feature dedicated to Virtual Machines created in VMware Workstation. However, you can still add HD Audio device to vSphere Virtual Machine by manually editing .vmx file. I have tested it in our lab environment and it works just fine.

Verify that the PCI devices are connected to the host and marked as available for passthrough. However, if your ESXi host is configured to boot from a USB device, you should disable the USB controller for passthrough. VMware does not support USB controller passthrough for ESXi hosts that boot from USB devices or SD cards connected through USB channels.
