Starting with vSphere 5.5 Patch 3, USB 3.0 devices are available for passthrough not only from a client computer to a virtual machine, but also from an ESXi host to a virtual machine. USB 3.0 devices still have the following virtual machine configuration requirements:

The latest ESXi 5.5 patch enables you to pass host-connected USB 3.0 devices through to VMs (Linux and Windows 8+, 2012+) where you can achieve great near-native performance. Besides from USB passthrough there is another way to make use of host-connected USB 3.0 devices.

It's a pity that VMware ESX server 3.x doesn't support USB bus and so your virtual machines are not able to access the USB devices directly while the VMware Server or VMware Workstation is. However, there are some applications which depend on such devices, for example they require to check a licence file stored in USB token. There are many threads published at VMware communities about it.

Sep 26, 2012 · VMware ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 support, but it's currently limited to using the vSphere Web Client to map client-side USB 3.0 devices to the remote VM. Long story short, turns out ESXi 5.1 doesn't really support USB 3.0 in the way you might think. In other words, if your system running ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 ports, that's nice!

USB 3.0 device support. ESXi 5.0 features support for USB 3.0 devices in virtual machines with Linux guest operating systems. USB 3.0 devices attached to the client computer running the vSphere Web Client or the vSphere Client can be connected to a virtual machine and accessed in it. USB 3.0 devices connected to the ESXi host are not supported.
