Oct 20, 2011 · As this hasn't been mentioned yet, my issue came from a new anti-malware I installed. The anti-malware disables specific application functionality to help protect the computer. However, some of these are required by visual studio to properly debug. So after allowing the visual studio process full access in my anti-malware, my problem was resolved.

If the project is based on .NET Framework 4 which is not support in Visual Studio 2008, I recommend you change the target framework. I strongly recommend you create a new project in Visual Studio 2008 and re-add the references to check if you can build it successfully or not.
