What this means is that the graphics driver used inside the guest virtual machines was only capable of simple 2D graphics and thus interfaces like Compiz on Linux and Aero on Vista were not useable.

Neither VMs' 3d acceleration work very well at all. the dxdiag tests fail for 3d. I have some older games I'd like to get running that need 3d support. I'd be happy to provide detailed feedback from these systems if it would help Virtualbox's 3d parts work better. using Virtualbox 4.3.12 and vm's are winxp sp3.

Instead of enabling 3D acceleration you should allocate additional virtual hardware resources to the Ubuntu guest OS if it is possible to do so without depriving the Windows 10 host OS of the physical hardware resources that it needs to run properly. Uncheck Enable 3D Acceleration. In the left pane of VirtualBox click the Ubuntu 16.04 guest OS.
