Nov 08, 2011 · The OpenGL Windows guest acceleration in VirtualBox came in late 2008 and in early 2009 there was Direct3D acceleration for Windows guests. The OpenGL Linux support came to VirtualBox a few months later. This support was originally introduced in the VirtualBox 2 series.

The OpenGL drivers in the VirtualBox Guest Additions are limited to OpenGL 2.1. Despite many requests for improved OpenGL capability in the VBox user forums I've seen no mention of the VBox developers working on OpenGL 3 or better support.

Give up on VirtualBox. VB's OpenGL guest support craps out at 2.1, even then only after you install VB Guest Additions from the command line with switches and then add some Registry keys to actually enable the OpenGL guest drivers.

OpenGL support for Windows guests was added with VirtualBox 2.1; support for Linux and Solaris followed with VirtualBox 2.2. With VirtualBox 3.0, Direct3D 8/9 support was added for Windows guests. OpenGL 2.0 is now supported as well. With VirtualBox 4.1 Windows Aero theme support is added for Windows Vista and Windows 7 guests (experimental)

This indeed occurs with 3D accelleration enabled, linux guest additions installed, and starting the guest vm from a host I am connecting to via RDP. Don't know for sure which virtualbox versions I tried, but they were at least 4.3.2, 4.3.8 and 4.3.10. Ubuntu versions in the VM I tested are 12.10, 13.10 and 14.04.
