It sounds like VirtualBox doesn’t support multiple virtual CPUs on your processor. I know it works on all modern machines I’ve tried, but if your processor is socket 604, it’s quite old. Have you tried creating a new clean VM as a last resort? As another option, set it to a different OS like Windows 2003 instead of Windows XP.

Virtualbox v3.0.4. is going way too slow on one core and the slider is grayed out to disallow me from adding my second processor. I'm not really certain why it doesn't work with 2, I've looked at some sources that say older dual-core celerons may not support hardware virtualization.

I have a desktop PC that supports VT-x and has single dual core processor. I have virtual machine that had 1 CPU defined. Now I have changed in VirtualBox GUI to 2 CPUs.
